This week, though, we are going to get away from the house. So, if you are looking for more than eating and shopping over this long holiday weekend, here’s a few fun activities we found happening in and around San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country…

What’s been a 30+ year tradition on the day after Thanksgiving in the Alamo City?

If you guessed the downtown Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony, you are correct!

The event runs tomorrow, Friday, November 29, from 7 to 10 p.m. featuring a parade of spectacularly lit river floats with celebrities, lavish costumes and bands for live musical entertainment along the San Antonio river – rain or shine – from southwest River Walk (near the Courtyard on St Mary’s at Commerce), west past the Arneson River Theatre where it will be filmed, then west for a bit following the river and turning to head east then north to El Tropicano.

Find route and ticket information online at https://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/parades/ford-holiday-river-parade-lighting-ceremony/

Everyone age 2 and older will need a ticket –  available for will-call pick-up and purchase starting at 10 a.m. on parade day at La Villita, 418 Villita St.

Plus, every evening now through January 6, you can stroll the San Antonio River Walk – free of charge – to see colorful holiday lights, and visit the restaurants, bars and shops along the way for additional festivities.

Something else to consider for this weekend…

Head north to Boerne for the 14th Annual Dickens On Main two-weekend celebration that encompasses all the joyful festivities that Christmas has to offer – holiday costumes, lights, music, decorations, community theatre, snow shows, fire pits, a Christmas parade and more, along Historic Downtown Main Street in Boerne, Texas…and it’s free and open to the public!

Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 6-7, from 6 to 10 p.m. each night. http://www.dickensonmain.com

(I remember last year riding in a horse drawn carriage and listening to some great music, from Celtic and rock to country and pop, on outdoor stages and inside the restaurants and bars along the way.  It was a lot of fun – I’m excited about this year!)
